Promoting Healthcare Careers in Youth
Since its opening , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas has been committed to extending care beyond its walls into the community . Shaping young minds and developing the healthcare professionals of tomorrow has been a big focus of these efforts . Each school year , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas hosts students enrolled in health , science and technology programs at Title 1 schools . Title 1 funding is available to schools with at least 40 percent of their students meeting low income criteria established by the federal poverty census . The funding is designed to assist schools in meeting the educational goals of low income students . In fiscal year 2018 , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas hosted 120 students from Garland and Mesquite schools three days a week for nine months .
During their rotation at the hospital , students observed multiple patient-facing environments , both clinical and non-clinical . Students were exposed to ten areas within the hospital , from Access Services to Radiology and Electrophysiology Lab . Leaders also help students prepare for their Health Occupations Students of America ( HOSA ) Competitions . Upon completion of the hospital program , students are encouraged to explore a career in healthcare . Over the years , several students who participated in the program have enrolled in or graduated from medical school , or have pursued nursing or allied healthcareers . Several past program participants have returned to Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas as staff members .
In addition to Garland and Mesquite schools , additional schools and area junior colleges and universities were represented in the total number of proctored hours on the Dallas and Fort Worth campuses .
Additional sponsorships to support careers in science , technology , engineering , and math ( STEM ) included supporting requests from various groups for hosting student tours , shadowing clinicians and physicians , the annual Dallas LINKS luncheon and education day , as well as hosting summer interns through the Mayor of Dallas Summer Intern Fellowship program . In fiscal year 2018 , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital - Dallas leaders supported the walkSTEM Dallas , a talkSTEM initiative , and celebrated national Pi Day at the AT & T Performing Arts Plaza . This organization is focused on encouraging science , technology , engineering , and math careers aimed at middle school students .
Promoting Healthcare Careers in Higher Education
Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital hosts nursing and allied health students from 16 higher education schools in North and Central Texas , including The University of Texas at Arlington , Baylor School of Nursing , Texas Christian University and Texas Wesleyan University . These students participate in clinical rotations during all shifts at both Dallas and Fort Worth campuses . As a teaching facility , hosted students have the ability to advance his or her knowledge in specialized areas such as nursing , sonography , kinesiology , dietary , and pharmacy . After clinical rotations , Graduate Nurses have gone on to become Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital team members .
