According to the Oxford Dictionary,
steampunk is defined as “A genre of science
fiction that typically features steampowered machinery rather than advanced
technology.” Fans of steampunk know it
to be much more, however, encapsulating
a distinct look of hats, goggles, sunglasses,
leather, boots, and rivets.
A popular movement is taking known
characters and dressing them up in this
steampunk look. French Canadian artist
Cynthia L’Ecuyer proudly displays her
interruptions of popular Disney fairy tale
princesses on the art web site deviantart.com
under the screen name MecaniqueFairy.
She currently works as a 2D artist for
Frima Studio in Quebec.
Her steampunk visions are fun and
unique as you can witness by the examples
on this page, from a scuba-inspired
Little Mermaid, to a very brainy, periodappropriate Belle.
Cynthia’s interpretations are set apart,
without a doubt, with flair and fun, and
steampunk pizazz. To get a look at the rest

When asked what makes art stand out,
she replied, “Maybe what could set me
apart myself it’s my ideas, or how I interpret
a subject or style.”
Pictured above are steampunk versions of
Disney princesses Cinderella, Ariel, Belle and
Rapunzel.
