Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1)
by Marissa Meyer, Narrated by Rebecca
Soler, 2012 MacMillan
Cinder is an amazing retelling of the classic
Cinderella story, but in a futuristic world of
humans and cyborgs. Our heroine is able
to be owned by a stepmother because she
is not all human or robot, but somewhere
in between. Cinder works as a talented
grease covered mechanic, picked on by one
stepsister, befriended by the other. The story
is set in New Beijing, a city of the future,
with all the bells and whistles that go along
in a dystopian-style story such as this.
The audiobook version of this story
is rather long, over ten hours, but is a
rewarding listening experience. The voice
actress Rebecca Soler narrates charmingly
in clear, crisp tones and correct inflections
at appropriate moments. She is engaging
without making her own performance the
star of the presentation, instead making
sure that the words of Marissa Meyer’s text
are brought to the fore and that the listener
Sisters Red
by Jackson Pearce, Narrated by Erin Moon,
Michal Friedman, Suzanne Toren, 2010
First Second
Fairy Tale reteller extraordinaire Jackson
Pearce delivers the Little Red Riding Hood
classic in a new and exciting format. In the
Sisters Red world, wolves are not merely
wolves, but the even more threatening
werewolves, disguised as eligible young men
in their non-animal guises. But what really
sells the story is the sisters’ (of the title)
ability to hunt, fight, and kill the beasts.
The audio version of the book is read by a
trio of ladies, whose voices vary from older
grandmother types to enthusiastic young
women. Enough action and romance is
present to propel the story in exciting tones
and maintain interest over the several hours
of listening. An audio sample can be found
