Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,
Paramount/MGM, 2013
Hansel & Gretel: Witch
Hunters has made its way
from the 3D screen to DVD.
The story starts out with
a familiar retelling of the
classic story. Young Hansel
& Gretel are abandoned
by their father deep in
a dark and foreboding
forest. They become
lost and stumble
upon a cottage
made of sweets
that happens to
be the home of
a wicked witch
who intends
to devour the siblings after fattening
them up. This plan is foiled however when
Gretel pushes her into the fires of her oven.
From here the story quickly and violently
diverges from its source material, as Hansel
& Gretel become famous killers of witches
after the taste of their first killing. The adult
version of the characters, played by Jeremy
Renner and Gemma Arterton, gleefully
mow down witches in bloody fashion, until
the plot kicks in and a mystery is unveiled.
Director Tommy Wirkola leaves very little
of the original story untouched, but has a
great visual flair that should be enjoyed by
those seeking unrelenting brutal action. The
film was rated R for its many graphic scenes
of violence. Those wishing a modern redux
of a classic fairy tale with contemporary
language, not to mention weaponry, are
in for a ride. To view the theatrical trailer
