SACKSTRASSE 16
The collection contains about 35 , 000 items
belonging to all areas of the artistically
formed lifestyle from the Middle Ages to the
present : evidence of the history of Styria ,
examples of aristocratic and bourgeois home
decor , metal , wood , ivory , ceramics , glass and
textile products and a collection of items from
wrought iron , a collection of costumes and a
collection of musical instruments .
The mission of the " Cultural - Historical
Collection " is to document " the cultural
epochs of the province from the early Middle
Ages to the present day ." This collection was
opened in 1895 as the " Museum of Culture and
Arts and Crafts " in Graz Neutrogasse . The
collection was placed in the Gerberstein
Palace in Sakstrasse from 2011 .
This was initiated by the sculptor Carl Lačcher
( 1850 - 1908 ), who was fascinated by the
movement associated with the first World
Exhibition ( held in London in 1851 ), which
rebelled against the power of industrialization
and the accompanying symptoms of a decline
in skill . The identity of the collection was
developed during the last several decades
mainly in the direction of arts and crafts and
design : the appointment of Bettina Habsburg -
Lothringen as the head of the collection in
2014 marked the beginning of the conversion
in the form of I return to the original mission .
