MALCOLM MILNE MEMORIAL CRICKET MATCH
Local cricket legend , former Pocklington School teacher and OP , Malcolm Milne ( 55-62 ), was remembered when Pocklington School 1st XI played Pocklington Pixies for the trophy in his name at the school ground on Sunday 8 May 2022 .
The Pixies , the invitation team with Pocklington School associations , included club cricketers from Pocklington , Londesborough Park , Yapham , Woodhouse Grange and Dunnington .
Against them the School made a slower start , with opener Harry Jackson ( 30 ) the mainstay . They lost wickets trying to accelerate , with spinner George Baty taking three in an over , but Harry Holland ( 16-22 ) ( 47 not out ) led the comeback and Henry Green ( 10-22 ) weighed in with a hard hit 20 at the end to take the School to 166-9 .
When the Pixies were 57-3 the game was nicely balanced with Harvey Laverack , the School ’ s leading bowler 2-19 . Adam lyer ( 96-06 ) and Jonty Atkinson ( 06-17 ) then came together and patiently built a match winning century stand that blossomed after tea . Iyer was the senior partner , reaching 75 not out , and Atkinson added an unbeaten 40 as the Pixies reached their target at 167-3 .
Malcolm Milne was an outstanding all-rounder with Beverley , Londesborough Park and Pocklington Pixies , and a leading coach and mentor to generations of young cricketers .
Pocklington School ’ s Director of Sport David Byas , recalled his immense contribution to School and community before presenting the Milne Trophy to Pixies ’ team captain , Iyer .
OP CRICKET
In the OP v School 1st XI cricket match , the OPs batted first and made their mark from the off , setting the School a target of 234 , built around a belligerent 75 from Henry Bayston ( 10-17 ) and a rapid-fire 37 not out from Henry Kay ( 13-21 ) leaving the schoolboys needing a strong start .
However , losing the skipper , Harry Jackson ( 15-22 ) in the first over was a huge blow and as the School faced the loss of a further two early wickets , it was going to be a hard task . Olly Rook held much of the innings together with a patient 60 but unfortunately , he ran out of partners as the boys were bowled out for 142 , 92 runs behind .
OPs 234-5 dec -- 42.5 overs ( H Snelling 2-28 , H Jackson 2-74 ) Pocklington 142 all out 43.5 overs ( O Rook 60 )
David Byas , Director of Sport commented : “ It was wonderful to have so many recent leavers back playing against the School and to play the ‘ timed ’ game in the manner they did was a great credit to them all .”
