NINTH ANNUAL POCKLINGTONIAN GOLF DAY
Reinstated after a 3-year gap , the ninth annual Pocklingtonian Golf Day held at The Oaks on Friday 10 June was full of drama including a swarm of bees temporarily invading the 10th tee and a rogue electric trolly taking on a life of its own to end up in the lake along with its owner ’ s car key ! Despite these distractions , Warrendale Farm held their nerve to clinch the win by a single point ahead of Beach House , and claim the President ’ s Cup .
Ten teams took part in the tournament this year which followed the Stableford format with the best two scores to count on each hole . As well as prizes for the top three teams , there were prizes for Nearest the pin , Nearest the pin in two and Longest drive .
As a bit of extra fun on the 7th hole , players had the opportunity to pit themselves against The Oaks ’ golf pro , James Walsh with anyone hitting the ball closer to the pin than James being entered into a prize raffle . The success rate was just over 25 per cent with 11 players securing a raffle ticket for the prize draw !
Once everyone had finished their rounds , the teams gathered for supper and the prize presentations . Trevor Loten ( 70-80 ), ex officio OP President stood in for current OP President , Joan Gough ( 75-77 ), to present the prizes .
Thanks go to Pippa ( 97-06 ) and Ed Nutt ( 95-06 ) and all the team at The Oaks for hosting another excellent day of golf , along with all our golfers for taking part .

OP TENNIS
An excellent turnout of 12 mixed doubles pairs , including students , OPs , parents , teachers and retired teachers competed for the Edmund-Loten Inspire Trophy on Sunday 26 June 2022 on the School astros . The tournament had not taken place since 2019 due to Covid , so it was great to see such a cross-section of players . It was a sunny and very windy afternoon , which made serving difficult , but there was some good-quality tennis played during the round-robin group stages before the standard increased yet further in the semi-finals .
Defending champion Frankie Marsh ( 06-13 ), with new partner Guy Littlejohn ( 00-07 ), battled through an extraordinary match against Isadora and James Philip , winning 10-8 in a tie-break , whilst three members of the Dyson family were involved in the other semi-final , with Jess Dyson ( 17-21 ) and Mohamed Gamal defeating Jess ’ s mum Eleanor and older brother Tom ( 15-22 ) 6-4 in another very close contest . The final kept the spectators on the edge of their seats , with Jess and Mohamed becoming the first student winners in the trophy ’ s history after a 6-4 victory against Frankie and Guy . Thanks to everyone who took part and who stayed on to support the finalists in what was an exciting afternoon of tennis .
Next year ’ s tournament will be on Sunday 2 July 2023 .
