16 - Get Ready for Convention!

A Procrastinator's Guide to Convention Prep

President Gabrielle Walker (Seven Hills)

Hey Ohio delegates! It's that time of year again! The time of year when the JCL clubs from Cleveland to Cincinnati are hustling and bustling with anticipation and the February wind begins to utter one phrase and one phrase only: Convention! Convention! Convention!

That's right! Ohio’s State Convention is upon us. Get some obnoxious red ink to mark your calendars! Clear your schedule for the next 2 months! And most importantly, save the date for March 8-10 for our convention at Crowne Plaza Columbus!

I know, I know: how quickly time flies! It feels like only yesterday we were at Emory, belting “Corn People” during Spirit, or enjoying Fall Forum at Columbus Academy. But now, the last event on the OJCL academic calendar is in nearly t-minus 20 days!

Did you lose track of time, too? Have an overwhelming pile of To-Do lists until Convention? With only so many weeks remaining, here are some ways you can make the most of these remaining weeks:

1. Finalize (or start!) group JCL club contests

All JCL delegations can create a club banner and T-shirt in accordance with this year’s convention theme, “leve fit, quod bene fertur, onus”—“The burden is light if you know how to support it" (Ovid, Amores 1.2.10). If your club has yet to brainstorm ideas for the banner, have no fear! Use one club meeting to bounce ideas off of delegates. Then, spring into action in your following meetings! The banner and t-shirt can showcase many different interpretations, from humorous, literal, artistically masterful, or out-of-the-box.

And if your delegation is a group of budding movie directors and advertising experts, consider also submitting a Music Video and Commercial. This year’s themes are “The Imperfect Tense” and “Persephone/Proserpina,” respectively.
