Developing leadership qualities through 70-20-10 “The success of the organisation is because of the people we hire.” – Mark Ward, Managing Director At Officeworks, we recruit for attitudes that align with our business. This means team members across all levels display attributes such as integrity, empathy and enthusiasm. We seek out team members who display excellent communication skills, who collaborate and recognise the achievements of others, and who strive for excellence and innovation. These are the key qualities of a good leader. Leadership is not exclusive to people leaders with manager titles. Leadership is an attitude, a behaviour. By lifting your gaze beyond your daily tasks and seeing the bigger picture, you can demonstrate leadership even without the title. With a workforce teeming with leadership attributes and a culture that encourages personal leadership and ownership, it’s no wonder we recruit and promote from within. Check out the Learning Calendar on Onet for information on the programs, workshops and modules that can help you grow your leadership skills. Meet some of our team members who are actively seeking to further their leadership skills through formal learning programs which make up the 10% of the 70-20-10 learning model. The 70% relates to on the job learning and 20% is social learning through coaching, mentoring, networking, and membership of professional organisation projects. Meet Lauren Hayes, Team Leader, Customer Service Centre (NSW) and Emerging Leader graduate Emerging Leaders is a program that prepare potential leaders at Officeworks with the skills, knowledge and attributes to successfully lead others. The program is about being intentional as a leader, leading as a team and leading as part of Officeworks. I was nominated for the program by my Team Leader after being with Officeworks for four years, having moved roles a few times with an aim to secure a Team Leader role. The program helped me develop fundamental skills, knowledge and attributes to lead a team. Particularly, it allowed me to understand the type of leader I want to be and the importance of being a leader within a team.   Emerging Leaders has allowed me to develop my understanding of self-awareness and influence in a leadership role. As a leader, I try to be conscious about the experience I’d like to create and how that can influence others within the team. It is important to be aware of how we engage with and react to others. Since the program has finished I have been successful in a Team Leader secondment at the CSC. 4
