Set in Prohibition Era Boston , when the production , distribution and sale of alcohol was banned , this cracking crime thriller – which is based on the bestselling novel by Dennis Lehane – tells the story of Joe Coughlin ( Ben Affleck ), the son of a Boston police captain who rebels against his strict upbringing by becoming a bootlegger , then eventually a notorious gangster .
‘ The American Dream has a price ’ warns the tagline – and that price for Joe , living in a dangerous city surrounded by dangerous men , is ( likely ) an early grave . But until that day arrives , he ’ s gonna have some fun . With Ben Affleck both directing and starring ( he also scripts ), Live By Night is an allguns-blazing affair that more than does justice to its superb source material . A must see !

Based on the awardwinning novel by Patrick Ness ( who also wrote the A Monster Calls script ), this moving and visually stunning drama tells the story of Conor , a 12-year-old boy whose mother is seriously ill . Bullied at school and – to an extent – at home ( by his fearsome but wellmeaning grandmother ), Conor is a lost soul living in a world drained of colour .
But he finds an unlikely friend in The Monster , an enormous , sentient tree who appears at his window at the same time every night

Featuring some truly incredible special effects and an all-star cast that includes Sigourney Weaver ( Galaxy Quest ), Felicity Jones ( The Theory of Everything ) and Love Actually ’ s Liam Neeson ( as the voice of The Monster ), this is an immensely powerful film that will stay with you long after the credits role .
Our advice ? Take tissues in abundance . In fact , anything you can find to mop up your tears – because there will be a heck of a lot .
