Question: " My dog doesn ' t really like sweaters, but I ' d like to dress her up for Halloween. Do you have any suggestions?"
Answer: Halloween can be fun for dogs, too, but the safest costume is one that keeps your pet comfortable and allows normal movement, breathing, and vision. Look for lightweight, soft costumes that do not restrict your dog’ s legs, neck, or chest. A simple festive bandana, bow tie, cape, or decorated collar can be a great alternative to a full costume. Avoid costumes with small pieces, dangling strings, buttons, or accessories that could be chewed off and swallowed. Nothing should cover your dog’ s eyes, nose, or mouth, and costumes should never be tight enough to interfere with breathing or circulation. Be especially cautious with masks and head coverings. Before Halloween night, let your dog wear the costume for short periods indoors, offering treats and praise to create a positive association. Never force a dog to wear something that causes fear, discomfort, or excessive scratching. Always supervise your costumed pet. If your dog pants excessively, freezes, tries to remove the costume, hides, or seems distressed, take it off immediately. Remember, your dog doesn’ t need an elaborate outfit to join the Halloween fun. Comfort and safety should always be the priority.
