“ Do you want to be remembered as a coward ?”
Scott ’ s dad was a stern man and gave him no choice . He added , “ You are one of the thousands of young men who have been asked to fight in this war . You have to go .”
Well , at least Scott wasn ’ t the first person that had been called on this very day . He decided to go see his friend , Todd Carey . Todd ’ s house was about the same size as Scott ’ s , but inside it felt much more modern ; they even had a TV !
Scott and Todd had gone to the same school when they were younger , Jefferson County School . It went from Pre-K to the end of high school . The boys were about the same height , 6 foot 1 , but Todd was way more athletic than Scott . I know what you might be wondering . Yes , Scott and Todd both went to college . They went to Albany University . When Scott entered Todd ’ s house , he noticed Todd was holding a letter . “ Did you get that envelope , too ?” asked Todd . “ Yeah ,” Scott responded . “ I have to go , but I don ’ t want to . My dad forced me into it .” “ Well , I wanted to , so I am going . You want to go with me tomorrow to the base in Rhinebeck ?” Todd asked . “ Of course , see you tomorrow .”
. . .
Scott got up at 6:16 the next morning , realizing he was already not on pace to go with Todd . He got up , put on his clothes , and looked in the mirror . This was one of the first times in a while that he hadn ’ t put on his tie-dye shirt and sweatpants . He let out a sigh , knowing his life was about to change forever . He ate breakfast and went to Todd ’ s place at about 7:15 am .
