Next , an Internal Selection Committee composed of faculty members of various subjects and grade levels evaluated each submission with reference to a shared rubric . After careful looking , reading , and discussion , this committee narrowed the semi-finalist submissions for each grade level to approximately nine finalists for art and nine finalists for writing .
Finally , this smaller set of submissions was passed along to an External Selection Committee made up of Saint David ’ s alumni who had excelled in art and writing during their Upper School years . These committee members spent time reviewing the works of all finalists individually ; then together they decided on the top three works of art and writing at each grade level . In an online discussion , they shared their reactions and excitement over the achievements of today ’ s Saint David ’ s students . They commented on how these works stirred their thoughts and emotions , leaving them astonished by the remarkable sophistication , complexity , originality , and skill in each piece . Seeing boys demonstrate “ all that they can be ” in such creative and scholarly ways made these alumni wistful for their own days in the classrooms at 12 East 89th Street .
The process was not easy , but , at every stage , Saint David ’ s students , faculty , administrators , and alumni looked past the challenges of change toward opportunities for excellence . I am confident that the works of student authors and artists published in the 2022 Obelisk represent every boy ’ s potential to excel when he taps his talents , applies his growing skills , takes imaginative risks , and invests himself fully in creating something of his own . The Obelisk team is pleased to celebrate this year ’ s top achievements in literature and art , and we look forward to sharing more excellent writing and artwork by Saint David ’ s boys in future publications .
