The 2021-2022 school year was specially focused on intersections of the scholarly and the creative at Saint David ’ s School , and I cannot think of a better time or context in which to introduce Volume XIII of Obelisk . The scholarship and creativity of Upper School boys shines bright in this new version of our Journal of Literature and the Arts . In these selections of writing and artwork , carefully culled from Grades Five through Eight , you will see the fruits of extensive research and reflection , fresh renderings of words and images , meticulous attention to details , and careful refinement of lines , whether written , drawn , sculpted , or carved . Each published piece not only reflects curiosity and critical thinking , it also extends inquiry and imagination — a process that characterizes many endeavors of the quintessential Saint David ’ s boy . Thus , as a whole , this year ’ s Obelisk offers a representative sample of the excellent work that can emerge from such a process .
Featured in these pages are three works of art and writing from each grade level , along with the prize-winners for Saint David ’ s traditional competitions . The three grade-level selections were determined through three rounds of evaluation , outlined below .
First , subject teachers nominated creative and scholarly work by every student , then collaborated to choose the top works in each grade to be considered for publication in the Obelisk . Artwork was reviewed by art teachers while poetry , essays , and short narratives were reviewed by English teachers .
