Monsignor Hugh O ’ Flaherty used his childhood experiences to develop a solid moral compass , which enabled him to see the Nazi atrocities . When he saw the horror of the Nazis , he moved swiftly to devote his time to helping as many people as he could . In times of adversity , he rose to the challenge and stayed resilient and a rock for those in need . Then after the war , he forgave all who had sinned , even baptizing his former enemy . O ’ Flaherty won many awards , like the U . S . Medal of Freedom and being named a British knight . In those tough times , Hugh O ’ Flaherty held his belief that people must “ learn to do right ; seek justice . Defend the oppressed . Take up the cause of the fatherless ; plead the case of the widow “ ( Isa . 1:17 ). He also lived by one other core belief : “ God has no country ” and “ there is good in every man ” ( Seah and Murphy ). The monsignor ’ s story is just as admirable as Oscar Schindler ’ s but not as well known . Schindler ’ s story is not the only one ; there are billions each day . Every good deed is a Schindler or O ’ Flaherty story to someone who has received an act of kindness .
