Helping your child prepare for nursery
Explain to your child that you will be taking him/her to nursery every day.
If you are worried about how your child may settle, try not to let him/her sense your anxiety. Talk
about coming to nursery together and the enjoyable time he/she will have. Be guided by staff when to
leave your child. Once your child is settled, try to collect him/her in good time. A child will feel very
insecure if you arrive a long time after the other parents.
Group time – Key workers
When your child starts Nursery, he/she will have a Keyworker and be placed in a “colour” group. The
children join their group at various points throughout the session. The Keyworker is a member of the
Nursery Team and will be your child’s and your own first point of contact in the Nursery. Please note if
your keyworker is unavailable to talk you can pass information to any member of staff.
As group activities are varied and planned across the year, your child may be included in different
groups for different activities, as appropriate. This enables the children to become familiar with the
whole team and interact with other children in different groups.
Your child’s first day
On your child’s first day at Nursery, you will be given a date and a time to arrive. Please report to the
main reception of the school and we will be informed that you have arrived. A member of the
nursery team will then be available to meet you as you arrive at the nursery entrance.
Dressing for nursery
Children are encouraged to dress themselves. Clothes worn should be suitable for both indoor and
outdoor play. Ideally they should wear:
comfortable clothes which are easily fastened and easily washed
slip on or Velcro fastening indoor shoes
outdoor shoes which are as easy for them to put on and take off by themselves. Velcro
fastenings are ideal.
clothes suitable for the season e.g. warm jackets in winter/ sun hats in summer etc
joggers/ leggings and polo shirt on gym days
wellington boots for wet/ muddy activities
In addition, all children require a complete change of clothes to be kept in a bag on their coat peg.
These clothes will be used in the event of a toilet accident or becoming wet at water play.
Children should not wear:
belts
superhero / princess dressing up costumes (except on specified theme days)
football colours
flip-flops, sandals, slippers or heavy trainers
clothes which carry advertising particularly for alcohol or tobacco
For safety reasons, we would be grateful if your child does not wear any jewellery.
Personal toys should be left at home unless being used for show and tell, as lost or damaged toys can
cause great distress.
Please mark all items, including footwear, with your child’s name.
