SENIOR PROGRAMS
“The North Texas Food Bank has been a
tremendous help in our lives.”
-Bobby Higgs, NTFB Client
Providing healthful foods to our senior population comes with
unique challenges, including catering to special dietary restrictions,
as well as finding ways to bring foods to homebound clients.
NTFB’s Nourishing Neighbors program, now in its second year,
helped provide food to homebound seniors and mature adults with
disabilities. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, some 200
clients received biweekly grocery delivery right to their doorstep.
Deliveries included shelf stable items, as well as fresh produce.
NTFB also serves as a Commodity Supplemental Food Program
distributor thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture and the Texas Department of Agriculture. The program,
known locally as PAN, or People and Nutrition, allowed for NTFB to
provide more than 8,500 low income seniors with a monthly box
filled with some 28 pounds of USDA commodities. The program
operates at more than 100 distribution sites in Dallas, Collin, Denton,
Ellis, Fannin and Kaufman counties.
Through a grant from NBC Universal, NTFB was able to partner with
Link2Feed to develop software for the intake of our senior clients.
This has allowed the team to better serve our clients, connecting
them with other services.
NTFB feeds more than 35,000
seniors living in poverty.
