HAPPY MEDIUM
THE PROJECT : Two clients , one an artist , the other an engineer , with different visions sharing a Providence loft .
WHAT THE JUDGES LIKED IN 2011 : The architects divided a raw space and created a double loft that speaks to both partners , using contrasting materials , casework and details that play well together .
WHY WE LIKE IT NOW : The design successfully satisfies two different aesthetics : the light-filled , serene surroundings of an artist brush up alongside the raw materials and “ working on race cars ” mindset favored by an engineer . The use of woods warms up the industrial feel ; the choice of chairs and tables is very sculptural ; pendant lighting illuminates the common spaces . “ It ’ s the interior design equivalent of successful couples ’ therapy .”

UP IN THE AIR
THE PROJECT : A high-rise city condo poised for a straightforward basic paint and furniture refresh .
WHAT THE JUDGES LIKED IN 2016 : A designer with a sophisticated vision saw the sleeping beauty potential beyond the client ’ s original proposal . The terrace that was little more than a frumpy concrete box was warmed up with boxwoods and turf area rugs to become a spacious extension of the indoor living area .
WHY WE LIKE IT NOW : Taylor ’ s use of textures and patterns , with a color palette of yellows and grays , translates as a trendy city apartment . The look is young , not overtly masculine or feminine but definitely chic . It doesn ’ t have a “ don ’ t-touch-this vibe ,” said one of our staffers .
