A MODEST PROPOSAL

THE PROJECT : A one-time shed that housed an RV becomes a streamlined retreat in Little Compton .
WHAT THE JUDGES LIKED IN 2018 : The transformation of a humble structure into a truly innovative renovation .
WHY WE LIKE IT NOW : The mix of the flat roof and pitched roof and the contrast between the two , which you don ’ t always see . The natural materials complement the construction of this lovely little house in the woods . The look is perfectly symmetrical and thought through . The addition of a sunroom with glass sliding doors and huge windows creates a dramatic opening to the outdoors and inspiration for its writer / homeowner .

POWER DOWN
THE PROJECT : A century-old bungalow doubling in size that becomes net-zero energy efficient .
WHAT THE JUDGES LIKED IN 2019 : Despite sitting on a relatively small lot , the house didn ’ t lose its scale although its footprint is twice the original .
WHY WE LIKE IT NOW : Another small Jamestown house that retained its farmhouse feel and didn ’ t lose its integrity after a major renovation . Even the addition of a dormer feels appropriate . Net-zero houses can be boxy but this feels inviting . The black solar panels complement the other exterior colors , and we liked that the architect didn ’ t try to disguise them . Creating a twenty-first century design that ’ s both welcoming and eco-friendly is tricky , but this one succeeds on both levels .
