JANET B. HICKS
COLEBROOK–Janet Louise
Brakel Hicks, 90, gracefully
passed on Nov. 6, 2016 lovingly
surrounded by family and caretakers in her Colebrook home.
Janet Hicks was born on
Sept. 17, 1926, in Houston, Tex.,
to Lewis Hubert Brakel and
Jane Hume Ellis Brakel. She
was a 1943 graduate of San
Marcos Academy in San Marcos,
Tex., where, she was voted
“Best-All-Round Girl,” played
basketball and was a member of
the Drum and Bugle Corps
among many other accomplishments. She attended classes at
the University of Houston in
Texas and later at Dartmouth
College.
Janet met her husband, the
late Parker Alba Hicks Jr. (formerly of PA Hicks and Sons
Hardware and US Customs) on
the last day of WWII at Ellington Field, Tex., and was married
in 1948.
Janet is survived by a sister,
Nancy Brakel Stowe (Alvin,
Tex.); daughter Capt. Pamela
Hicks Krueger (United Airlines)
and partner, Mikael Markow
(Hillsborough, N.J.); sons Justice Gary Ellis Hicks and wife,
Patricia Garrell Hicks (Manchester), Dan Parker Hicks
(Plymouth) and Michael William Hicks (Concord); grandchildren

Sullivan and husband, Lt Col
Byron D. Sullivan (USMC),
Attorney Rebecca Hicks Gallup
and husband, Richard W. Gallup (Sudbury, Mass.), as well as
James G. Hicks and wife, Allyson Rheinhard Hicks (Santa
Monica, Calif.). She was thrilled
to be blessed with great-grandchildren Master Cole and Miss.
Chloe Sullivan and Masters Calvin and Miles Gallup; as well as
loving friends and relatives all
over the world.
Hicks’ love of life, faith, grace
and beautiful soul touched
many. She had a way of making
every person she met feel like
they were the most interesting
and important person on the
Earth.
Hicks retired as the Colebrook District Court Clerk in
1994. She was an avid reader
and accomplished painter. Her
garden was more of a life’s opus
than a hobby. Health and nutrition was a life-long focus for
Janet. She was an adventurer
who explored many corners of
the world. Her passion was service to others through the Mona-
donock Congregational Church
where she was a beloved Sunday
School teacher and a member of
the choir. Her crystal clear mezzo
soprano could be heard for almost
60 years. Most everyone in town
has, at one time or another,
admired wreaths with bows she
tied for the annual Christmas
Bazaar. In her earlier years, Janet
enjoyed being a member of the
Colebrook Garden Club, book
clubs, exercise clubs, Bible Studies at the Monadonock Congregational Church, participating in
area choirs and acting in town
plays that raised money for Colebrook’s school system.
In her final days, when asked
what she believed her greatest
life’s accomplishment she replied,
“My children and grandchildren.”
There are no public calling
hours. A memorial service will be
held on Sat., Nov. 19, 2016, at 2
p.m. at the Monadnock Congregational Church in Colebrook, with
a graveside committal to immediately follow. A time of fellowship
will take place after that in the
church vestry.
