Around The Region

REMEMBRANCE DAY EVENTS
The sound of bagpipes rang down Main Street Bury on Saturday afternoon at 2 p. m. sharp. The small town of Bury, Que., along with the Bury branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, held their annual Remembrance Day Service. This all took place at the Bury Armory.
At 2 p. m., Bury Mayor Walter Dougherty welcomed over 100 people to the service. The Veterans, Bury Legion, ANAF Unit 318 along with Bury Fire Dept marched in and the service was underway with the singing of“ O Canada,” and the names of the fallen being read out. Wreaths from the many organizations from the region were placed at the cenotaph.
We were standing up above the service and a young fellow all decked out in a Naval Cadet uniform caught our eye. We had to check out this young fellow and found him to be Jeremy Bernier, age 11, from Bury. We made sure to snap a photo of this proud fellow.
Bury has a special point of pride because, in war, years it had the highest enlistment per capita in all of Canada.
Queen Street in Lennoxville was also host to the bagpipe-led contingent this past Sunday morning as local veterans, Legion members, ANAF Unit # 318, Bishops College School band, 1st Lennoxville Scouts and local military marched down Queen Street ending up at the cenotaph where all were greeted by a big crowd. A lovely service was held in honor of the fallen through the war years.
Many wreaths were placed at the foot of the memorial by local government, organizations, ANAF Unit 318 Lennoxville Scouts and many others. It was a cold, windy day, but the caring hearts in the crowd kept everyone warm.

CRAFT SHOW IN NEWPORT
We stopped in at the Newport Town Hall to attend the Fall Craft Show being held last Saturday. We entered and were amazed with the handmade crafts, jams and jellies, pickles, and the beauty of the crafts being displayed for sale.
We came along to a huge table full of pickles, jams, and relishes which were made by Jeanne Marquis of East Angus. This lady always amazes all with her items. We also stopped at event organizer Anne-Marie Dubeau and found her granddaughter, Valerie Papillon( which is“ Butterfly” in English.) These two ladies had a table full of crafts. We also came in contact with a couple from Yukon and now living in East Angus with their young child. They make handmade cutting boards and other natural wood items. This was a

ELI COOK SINGS THE BLUES IN BETHLEHEM 42 Maple Contemporary Art Center’ s Cabin Fever Concert Series in Bethlehem has an intimate house-concert atmosphere with limited seating; guests are invited to get comfortable, enjoy the music, and then mingle with the performers after their sets. This month Cabin Fever is proud to welcome modern Blues and Rock artist, Eli Cook. According to Blues Matters Magazine, Eli is“ among the top three solo Blues artists worldwide.”“ The best Blues singer of his generation,” states All Music Guide.
The legendary Son House( 1902-1988) was known to say“ Blues is a feelin’.” Eli Cook’ s music expresses that same raw honesty in a unique blend of contemporary and old-school styles, creating an original sound at the forefront of modern Blues and Rock.
Eli took up the guitar as a teenager in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia. Following the tradition of the great bluesmen,
he performed in churches and late-night gospel revivals with only his acoustic and deep baritone voice, while playing every hole-in-the-wall bar that could handle his electric power trio. Blending the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Fred MacDowell, Bukka White and Lightning Hopkins with the likes of Clutch, Soundgarden, C. O. C, and Rage against the Machine, he forged a fresh sound, alive with the southern blues tradition.
Eli recorded and released his first two albums between 2004 and 2007: the all-acoustic, original-roots album“ Miss Blues’ Child” on the Sledgehammer Blues label, and a heavy bluesrock release“ ElectricHolyFire- Water”. During this time, he was invited to open for B. B. King on King’ s east coast tour. Since then, Eli has shared the stage with Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, Parliament- Funkadelic, Gary Clark JR, Roomful of Blues and many others. In 2008, Eli released his third self-produced album,“ Static in the Blood”, a modern R & B / Rock crossover project featuring ornate experimental studio production. The follow-up album,“ Ace Jack & King”, a return to roots-blues and heavy guitars, received critical acclaim. The All Music Guide proclaimed that Eli could be“ the best blues singer of his generation.”
In 2013, Eli signed with LAbased label Cleopatra Records to begin work on his 5th studio album, featuring guest appearances by rock legend Leslie West of Mountain, Artimus Pyle( Lynyrd Skynyrd) Reese Wynans of Double Trouble, Vinny Appici( Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio) and Tinsley Ellis. The album was released in Spring 2014.
