pessimistic ones that the brain is hard wire for.
Third, you must get enough sleep.
I will tell you that quality is
much more important than quantity.
And the best tool for quality
sleep is a consistent wake up time, day in and day out. If you don’t
believe me about sleep, try going two nights in a row with 3 hours of
sleep each night and then try to find happiness, it will be pretty
damn hard to find. If you are a parent, you know what I am talking
about.
The fourth thing is to imagine an incredible future.
Imagine a
future that may be so great that you may not believe it’s possible.
And keep imagining it, day after day. This is what I do first thing
in the morning after taking the pups for their walk.
I work on
theater of the mind for at least 10 minutes every morning. Remember,
a big part of happiness is now where you are, it’s where you think
you are heading.
Up next is to have a flexible schedule.
Throughout the past few
years, when I have done literally hundreds of mind map sessions with
clients and friends, I almost always have the client develop their
own definition of happiness.
I do this because the brain needs
clarity to move forward. Although everyone has different definitions,
one underlying common element is freedom.
Freedom to do what you
want to do in life, but more importantly, when you want to do it. I
wouldn’t trade the freedom that I have for any amount of money.
I
can take Braxton for a walk when I want to.
A lot of people can do what they want, just not when they want to do
it.
This is a HUGE thing to work towards.
By the way, this
‘freedom’ can relate to anything (think of all the diets you have
done in the past, they more than likely have taken some of your
freedom, which causes you to resent it, which means you to have to
rely on will power, which means it will never work long term).
Sixth is to pick something that you can steadily improve at.
This
can be a hobby such as golf or tennis or it can be a business skill.
In a recent episode of the ULYIS podast, I talked about Mike Lockett,
perhaps the freakiest bodybuilder of all time. He was so gifted that
he didn’t have to work for anything in the sport. He disappeared and
went into a deep state of depression.
