T he 2018 Annual Report for the Lighthouse states, “At the Lighthouse, we’re empow- ering people so they can earn a paycheck, acquire indepen- dence, and join a community of people who rely on them from day one. We see those impacts every day — a head carried a little higher, a smile that comes a little quicker, a stride that’s a little bit faster. These things say: I am contributing. I am needed here, today.” Since that time, the company has made compression sacks, shovels, jigsaw puzzles, white boards, and over 50 years of parts for The Boeing Company. Their most recent contract was for nylon-aluminum stretchers for the U.S. Army. T oday Lighthouse has 495 total employees — 265 em- ployees who are blind and 35 who are deaf-blind. In addition, there are 25 who are blind with other disabilities. 29 percent of employees work in aerospace according to the 2018 Annual Report, while 50 percent of employees work in defense and office products. For naysayers that wonder how a business employing those with disabilities might fare, the proof may be in the numbers. The aerospace division brings in more than 14 million dollars in revenue and the defense division charts close to 32 million dol- lars. Manufacturing and services sales come in at over 84 million dollars. DECEMBER 2019 | JANUARY 2020 ISSUE NO. 12 33
