Sandy MacDonald bought himself a pound
of peppermint fudge and got another half-pound
free. There were plenty of mouths available to
help lighten the package. Shops were well
patronised and a number of the boys had long
‘gambling’ sessions with Marrin Haggie’s toy one
-armed-bandit and every one-cent coin they could
scrounge off the group.
Reading and sleeping were two of the most
popular activities for those waiting.
