Buildings in the NHL are eligible for preservation grants and technical preservation assistance. There are currently 2,500 properties that are considered Historic Landmarks, 23 of them reside in Newport. All of the properties in the NHL are also featured in the National Register of Historic Places. Table 11-3 shows the 23 landmarks in Newport that are considered National Historic Landmarks. Table 11-3 - Newport’s National Historic Landmarks Landmark Year Built Date Listed Significance Wanton-LymanHazard House 1697 10/9/1960 This house is the oldest surviving house in Newport. The house gets its name from its second owner, Richard Ward, who was a lawyer and later governor of the colony of Rhode Island in 1741. The house was purchased by the Newport Historical Society in 1927. Trinity Church 1726 10/18/1968 The congregation that later formed and built the Trinity Church arrived in Newport to get away from the Church of England. Once their numbers grew enough, the built the Trinity Church as it exists today. The structure still functions as a church and is open for tours to the public. Old Colony House 1736 10/9/1960 The Old Colony House is the fourth oldest statehouse still standing in the country. Also known as the Old State House, this structure served as the primary state house of Rhode Island until 1901. The Colony House is now owned by the State of Rhode Island and is managed by the Newport Historical Society Redwood Library 1747 10/9/1960 The Redwood Library is the oldest private library in America. The library opened in 1750 and was the first library in the State of Rhode Island. Additions to building itself have been completed over the years, but the style is complimentary to that employed by the original architect, Peter Harrison. Hunter House 1748 10/18/1968 Vernon House 1758 10/18/1968 The Hunter House displays examples of the finest achievements of eighteenth century arts and crafts done in Newport. Purchased by Mrs. Geoerge Henry Warren in 1945, she formed The Preservation Society of Newport County and made the Hunter House the first of the Society’s preserved properties. The house got its namesake from its second owner, William Vernon. The house underwent expansions in 1760 and it is widely thought that the famed architect Peter Harrison was the one who designed them. George Washington stayed in the house for a week during 1781; it is believed that he was working on Draft Existing Conditions (March 2016) Page 11-5
