New Brighton Rugby Club Annual Report 2013 (Volume 1) | Page 29

We had a great finish to the season, winning our last three games in a row. It a shame the season had to finish. We competed extremely well in all but for two games, one which was a windblown match at Lyttelton, where in the first half we were playing against the wind and I'd swear that some of players were almost blown backwards as they tried to move forward. However, 5 different players scored one try each which made up for the trying conditions! Anyway thanks to the kids for making it a great team to coach. I had plenty of smiles through the season. We started the season well, were consistent in the middle but were inconsistent towards the end. Our initial games were good. We were playing well. Our first 7 games produced 4 wins, two hard fought draws and a loss against a team we were level with at half time. The school holiday break, illness and injury seemed to stall our momentum. Other teams were starting to work out our game plan. We rallied for a good win against Shirley - one of the highlights of the season, but finished with a disappointing loss to Linwood who we let play well. Our challenge for next year is to make ourselves a more consistent team where everyone knows their role and can do it for the team every week. Coaching the team has been good fun again this year. As a coach you get a lot of satisfaction seeing the individuals grow and play their best rugby. Thanks to Derek and Sid. Derek took on a lot more coaching responsibility as the main backs coach. Sid was there for us again this year. He took a huge amount of pride at the performance of the forwards. Thank you Sid and Derek.
