Jai doesn't have any children playing in our team, so it really is fantastic that he would give up his time on Thursdays and Saturdays to help out. Jai's influence has really helped the team develop into a very good rugby playing team! Thanks Jai! Also, Amy Price did a great job as our manager. It's one of those jobs that is so important to keep every informed of what's happening and when. Other parents I'd like to mention are Niels and Danny who turned up to help at every training session. Thank you all. It's been another great season of rugby this year and I can say without a doubt that all players have improved so much this season. This has especially made it difficult picking our Most Improved Player of the Year; but Zac Bergensen is a deserved recipient. This was Zac's first year playing rugby and he soon picked up the rules and became a player who made quite a difference in the forwards considering his small stature. When we were low on numbers up front he was sometimes put in the forwards, which proved quite useful as he would often come out of mauls with the ball in hand. His usual position was centre and was able to support other players and be ready to receive a pass on his way forward. Player of the Year was also a tough pick. Matthew, Quinn, Ren and Monti were all contenders. In the end it came down to communication and we decided Monti Nicholls would be our Player of the Year as he showed early on how important talking to the backs was in setting up the backline ready to receive the ball after a scrum or lineout. His tackling was outstanding considering he is probably the smallest in our team. He was so very effective in tackling around the legs; and we all know how important that is! I have to make special mention of Matthew Messina. Matthew came from South Africa and without a doubt he has the best kicking game and read of the game I have seen for a 10 year old. There were a number of tries he scored this season that came from a mid-field kick and the ball would, more often than not, sit up for him. Quinn was our highest try scorer and it was good to see his attacking skills develop further this year. Our back line really started to hum towards the end of the season, our two halfbacks Cheamus and Dylan did great jobs in passing the ball from the breakdowns. Quinn, Ren and Zac became quite effective in breaking through the tacklers and offloading to supporting players. Our passing this season was great and Hunter had a couple of brilliant games and just seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Callum has progressed really well this year and is managing to improve tackling and driving nicely over the ball. In the forwards, Noah was outstanding in ripping the ball and I could see a bit of Richie McCaw in him this year. Other forwards making a great effort and improving through the year were Kieran, our hooker, Rueben, Ben and Jed. Our only girl in the team, Tayla, managed to score a try in the last game of the season. Well done! Jack, our gentle giant, made good progress this year and it was good to see him involved in the mauls to help the other forwards out.
