Naturally Kiawah Winter/Spring 2021 - Volume 43 | Page 11

With genuine enthusiasm , the committee presented its plan to the Board in September 2020 . The result of more than a year of intense study , discussion , writing , and revision produced a plan including significant changes while remaining true to the overarching goals of the Conservancy throughout its history .
How did we arrive at these significant changes ? Over the months the committee studied the Mission Statement in light of its expanded vision and goals and rewrote it . It looked hard at current realities and compared and contrasted them with the new vision . It set quantifiable targets for each goal — one to three , four to seven , and eight to 10 years as milestones to be reached . It assessed its organizational capabilities and identified resources that may be needed . Finally , it developed
paths to success through several strategic steps .
What are the components of the new vision for 2030 ? First , to assure our Island and its environs become ecologically resilient with a healthy balance of wildlife , habitat , and clean water in the midst of development . Second , to lead an active program to upgrade habitat with locally native plants . Third , to preserve critical watershed surrounding Kiawah Island , recognizing that Kiawah and everything on it is impacted by its surroundings .
Through all the revisions , the concept of “ Ecological Health ” held sway . Definitions may vary when in conversation with scientific advisors . It is one of those qualities that may be challenging to precisely define , but you know it when you see it . Research will drive us to better understand all the elements
