This final session will be an opportunity for YEOs to engage with other women elected
officials and trusted advisors, and to find the sense of support and guidance that is often
missing in a field with few women. The panel will discuss the challenges and strengths
of being a woman in elected office, as well as everyday tips for managing public and
personal life. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their
own experiences.
The Honorable Betsy Butler
Former Member of the California State Assembly
Betsy Butler served in the California State Assembly for the 53rd
District from 2010 to 2012. During her term, the Governor signed 14 of her
bills which prioritized veterans, elders, the environment, working families,
and consumer rights. Her commitment to justice and the environment spans her entire
career, including her time working at the California League of Conservation Voters and the
Environmental Defense Fund. Butler also served under Lt. Governor Leo McCarthy and at
the Department of Commerce under the Clinton administration. She presently serves on the
boards of Equality California, the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project of Los Angeles, and
the Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial Task Force. Additionally, she sits on the Advisory
Board of Peace Over Violence, a domestic violence education and support organization.
She is the former President of the National Women’s Political Caucus and a former
appointed member of the California Film Commission.
The Honorable Fiona Ma
Former Member of the California State Assembly
Speaker Pro Tempore Emeritus Fiona Ma was elected to represent the
12th Assembly District from November 2006 to November 2012, serving
the maximum three terms. She was the first Asian American woman to ever
serve as Speaker Pro Tempore. Building on her work combating toxic chemicals in San
Francisco, Ma authored groundbreaking legislation to ban toxic chemicals in baby products
statewide—the first such law in the nation. Senator Dianne Feinstein incorporated Ma’s
bill into the US Consumer Product Safety bill which now protects all babies and children
across the nation. As chair of the select committee on domestic violence, she authored
legislation to protect survivors of domestic violence, ensure due process, and protect the
interests of children throughout domestic violence proceedings. Throughout her career in
