The Honorable Nury Martinez
City of Los Angeles
On July 23, 2013, City Council member Nury Martinez became the
second Latina in over 25 years and the only woman elected out of 18 Los
Angeles city offices. A neighborhood watch captain, homeowner, and
mother, Martinez is focused on getting back to the basics and delivering resources to the
Valley. From cleaning our streets and providing safe neighborhoods for our children to
ensuring local, middle-class jobs, Martinez is dedicated to fighting for the residents of the
sixth district. In her unique role as the sole elected female member of the Los Angeles City
Council, Martinez is committed to encouraging and supporting girls and women to take
leadership roles and be part of government. Martinez is a graduate of San Fernando High
School and California State University at Northridge. She and her husband Gerry live in Sun
Valley with their young daughter, Isabelle.
The Honorable Monica Rodriguez
City of Los Angeles
Monica Rodriguez is the vice president of the LA Board of Public Works
and has more than 18 years of public and private sector experience. As an
executive with the California Association of Realtors (CAR), Rodriguez
was responsible for the strategic development and implementation of the organization’s
philanthropic housing initiatives aimed at expanding and preserving homeownership for
all Californians. She designed and executed the Mortgage Protection Program to protect
families from foreclosure in the event of job loss. Previously, Rodriguez served as the
community affairs manager for Mayor Richard Riordan and deputy to Councilmembers Mike
Hernandez and Richard Alarcon. While with Mayor Riordan, Rodriguez led the successful
implementation of two $3 million federally funded Targeted Neighborhood Initiatives which
she leveraged for community revitalization efforts. For the past several years, Rodriguez has
served as president of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality Political Action Committee
(HOPE-PAC), an organization dedicated to the advancement and support of Latinas running
for office.
