A C C O M M O D AT I O N S I Accommodations nnkeepers of the Nantucket Lodging Association run world-class lodging establishments with an abiding commitment to environmental sustainability. Their efforts have been successful, in part, by creating awareness among staff members and guests, inspiring them to become partners in their sustainability initiatives. Both guests and staff members are invited to support the environment through everyday actions at home and while working – and boarding – at island inns and hotels. Innkeepers recognize their responsibility to reduce the consumption of water, waste and energy at island properties and, as independent operators, follow their own environmental practices, reflecting a true appreciation of Nantucket’s natural beauty. Each innkeeper would be delighted to share his/her individual practices with you! 38 • 2016 Official Guide to Nantucket In terms of natural resources, many accommodations strive to utilize exterior and interior materials with recycled content. Energy-efficient appliances, light fixtures, and mechanical equipment are also used – when possible – to insure lower monthly operating costs than conventional models. In many cases, interiors are insulated with both Icynene spray foam and GreenGuard batt insulation to create a completely sealed building envelope. Water conservancy is achieved through the use of dual flush toilets and low maintenance landscaping design requiring minimal irrigation. These are but a few of the ways in which lodging proprietors on Nantucket implement eco-friendly initiatives to comply with – and respect – the critical need to preserve our fragile environment.
