Coleus blumei (Mayana) is one of the traditionally used folkloric medicine and is primarily used for pain, sore, swelling and cuts and in other instances as adjunct medication for delayed menstruation and diarrhea. This traditional uses of mayana are scientifically supported by studies here and abroad. Chemists form the University of the Philippines isolated sterols and triterpenes form the leaves of mayana and it exhibited analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Other health-benefitting phytoconstituents include alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannin, volatile oil, and quercetin. Another interesting component of the plant is its high rosmarinic acid content. This compound was noted for its high biological activities; prominent of those are its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

10. Ganoderma lucidum (Ganoderma) has been called as the “King of Herbs” and “Mushroom of Immortality”. It contains at least 150 antioxidants and 200 health-benefitting phytonutrients. The bioactive molecules identified to be present in Ganoderma include steroids, phenols, nucleotides and their derivatives, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, glycoproteins, and polysaccharides. The major physiologically active constituents of Reishi mushroom are the terpenoids and glucans which are reported to increase resistance against tumor growth, reduce the likelihood of metastasis, boost immunity, and regulate metabolism. Ganoderma is a potent immune system regulator and has a promising potential as an agent against cancer. It also has effective blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol lowering properties. It has platelet aggregation inhibition, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities as well. It has been used to reduce stress or fatigue and improve sleep.
