If that isn't the
sweetest friendship
ever then I don't
know what else is!
and their close bond even
led to Hallam marrying
Tennyson's sister.
Hallam often visited the
Tennyson family house
to be close with his best
friend and if that isn't the
sweetest friendship ever
then I don't know what
else is!
Unfortunately the
friendship only lasted so
long as Hallam's sudden
death in 1833 caused a big
shock to Tennyson's life
and for a while, he was
never the same.
He withdrew completely
from his usual activities
and spent his time in
mourning. The long
period of grief however,
led to him write some of
the most moving elegies
and lyrics. The works
were soon collected and
made into one of the
greatest elegaic works in
English literature, In
Memoriam: A.H.H, a
work in honor of his dear
friend.
After that, Tennyson
was hailed as the
greatest of English poets
and was awarded
numerous honors. He
was the most highly
regarded poet of his time
and the most widely read
of all English poets.
Tennyson had it all but
when Hallam died, he
lost everything.
Thankfully he didn't quit
writing and kept moving
forward. It's too good to
be true, Tennyson but
you sure found your way
up from rock bottom.
