I
’ m not sure why we didn’ t go to Moultrie’ s
Farmers Market. It might not have been auctioning small loads of produce at the time or maybe they thought they’ d have a better chance of selling their squash in Thomasville.
Fast forward quite a few years to when I’ m living in Monterey, California. Every Tuesday, year-round, 31/2 city blocks were turned into a farmers market. It was certainly not what I expected and definitely expanded my definition of a farmers market.
Not only were there fresh vegetables and fruits but there were fresh flowers, fresh bread and pastries, fresh pasta, handmade jewelry and clothes, international food vendors and a variety of arts and crafts. Also, a variety of fresh meats and seafood. I could get everything I needed to cook just about anything for supper, plus candles and fresh flowers for the table.
Having a farmers market in Downtown Moultrie is not a new idea. It has been tried in past years. However, I think residents of the community still thought, more or less, what I thought a farmers market was before I experienced the one in Monterey. So participation and attendance was low. Also, putting together a farmers market could just about be a full-time job in itself. Vendors need to be found and kept in-touch with on a regular basis, marketing for the event needs to be optimal and consistent and there needs to be a variety of products that will appeal to a wider audience. These are the things that made the market in Monterey successful over the years.
Bandwagon Brewing Company has taken up the challenge of mounting a successful farmers market in downtown Moultrie. Since June of last year, the business has been holding a farmers market about once a month on its outside patio.
