On the Podium at Cango
Thanks to a partnership between the Cango Marathon and Tifosi Sports , the innovative On shoes and accessories were a welcome addition to the prize purse for the leading marathoners .
The Precambrian limestone foothills of the Swartberg Mountains , near the town of Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape , once again provided a beautiful backdrop for the Cango Marathon on 25 February . With a starting point at the world famous Cango Caves , this marathon has an overall downhill route profile as it runs back to town on the R328 , so it provides the opportunity for fast times , and also makes the race popular with runners trying to post faster qualifiers for the big ultra-marathons later in the year . The event also featured a half marathon , starting at Ou Tol on the marathon route , with both races finishing at Langenhoven Gymnasium in Oudtshoorn .
The first runner home in the marathon was Bernardo Fredericks , crossing the line in 3:20:44 , with Rory Scheffer following about a minute later , and Willard Jussah taking third place . Sarah Silber claimed the women ’ s title in 2:58:32 , with Danette Walley second and Linda Kinloch- Smith third . These winners not only walked away with generous cash prizes , but were also kitted out with On running shoes and accessories , thanks to a sponsored partnership secured through Tifosi Sports , the only official distributor for the On brand in Southern Africa . The half marathon win went to Selwyn Matthews in 1:05:31 , with Carla Molinaro taking line honours in the women ’ s race in 1:17:55 .
