People, Planet, Profit
There are three P’s which are all contributing aspects to the fashion industry.
Let’s begin with the first point; people. People make the world (including this 3 trillion dollar industry).
Without people, there would be no clothes; no designers, no garment workers and no overly optimistic (or shockingly moody) sales assistants to help you make your purchase.
In perspective of how each person involved in the process is equally as important, we need to be more vigilant of how each person is treated, where we choose to buy our clothes from and how we can move forward as a collective to ensure the fair treatment and living quality of those involved; of course this is directed more towards the stars hidden in the background; the factory workers.
In 2013, more than 1,100 factory workers died and many more were injured when the Rana Plaza complex collapsed in Bangladesh.
This truly devastating incident could have been completely avoided when several reports were made on the building’s foundation being unstable, yet workers were forced to return to work as normal or they’d be left with no money to feed their family and/or themselves.
This is just one disaster and the poor quality of life and working conditions for people in similar places is still going unnoticed and nothing is being done by huge companies which are making more than enough profit to invest in safer working conditions and decent wages. .
