The Church of São Francisco de Assis, designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1943, is part of the Pampulha architectural project commissioned by the mayor of Belo Horizonte, Juscelino Kubitschek. This set is a landmark of modern architecture in Brazil and the world, sheltering various icons of Brazilian modernism.

One of the main attractions of the architectural and urbanistic complex of Pampulha, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, framed by the waters of the lagoon, gathers the geniuses of the architect Oscar Niemeyer, the landscaper Burle Marx and the painter Cândido Portinari. The combination generated the building in blue tones, with lines and curves totally covered by tiles and panels depicting the Via Sacra and the image of San Francisco.
