The stadium has already hosted five Copa Libertadores finals and an Intercontinental Cup, in addition to having received three FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 matches and six FIFA World Cup 2014 matches.
The Mineirão remained for decades as the country's second largest indoor stadium, with capacity for 130,000 fans, behind only Maracanã. With the modernization work done for the stadium to host the World Cup, the new Mineirão had its capacity reduced to 62 thousand seats, aiming for greater comfort for the fans, and that left the arena in the standard of the main stages of world football.
