such as France, Italy, Germany, Iran, Japan, Czech Republic, America and
Brazil. According to famous Turkish film critic Asuman Suner, first “new
movies” in Turkish cinematography appeared after the military coup in 1960
and the directors were greatly influenced by Italian neo-realism. Meanwhile,
other film critics argue that the start of Turkish New Cinematography should
be referred to 1990s and as most influential directors of movement they
mention Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Zeki Demirkuz, Semih Kaplanoğlu, Yeşim
Ustaoğlu, Reha Erdem, Derviş Zaim, whose films got different prizes in
Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Toronto film festivals. Within the directors
mentioned above, special attention should be paid to Nuri Bilge Ceylan. His
first film «Cocoon » («Koza», 1995) was the first Turkish short movie to win in
Cannes Festival. «Distance» («Uzak», 2002) and «Once upon a time in
Anatolia» («Bir Zamanlar Anadoluda», 2011) got Grand Prize in Cannes, as
well. Ceylan’s last movie «Winter sleep» («Kış Uykusu», 2014) won Palme
d'Or during the Cannes festival.
