MKHITARYAN MARIAM ( YSU ) ABD AL-FATAH AS-SISI ’ S ATTEMPTS FOR MODERNISING THE EGYPTIAN SOCIETY
The main idea of this article is to show the steps that Abd al-Fatah as- Sisi takes in order to modernise and change the Egyptian society . The history showed that after the Egyptian revolution of 2011 the most organised and active power was in the hand of the organisation called Muslim Brotherhood whose representative Muhammad Morsi managed to become president from 30 June 2012 to 3 July 2013 . The vast majority of Egyptian society , who did not like his ruling and was afraid of radicalisation , made a revolution in lead by Defence Minister Abd al-Fatah as-Sisi , who later on in June 2014 became president . Immediately after becoming president he initiated steps that were aimed to neutralise the power of Brotherhood and prevent the process of radicalisation inside the society .
The article describes the three major fields as-Sisi started from for reaching his goals .
First one is the educational sector that is considered to be one of the main ways of spreading the radical ideology . The curriculum of schools was revised , books of radical writers were prohibited and subjects , that promoted religious solidarity , were included in the curriculum . Second , around 27 thousand places of worship of less than 80 square meters were closed . This step intended to protect young people from militancy and extremism . Third , the government banned niqab-wearing women from voting and lecturing . This caused a wave of discontent in the country .
It ’ s hard to say whether as-Sisi will succeed , but the fact that these steps will leave a trace on the further development of the Egyptian society is obvious .
