MHC Dish From the Pitch 2014 Week 5 | Page 18

Lucky Number... Five!?!?!

The final game of the day saw the the Brocach Bandits face off against the intrepid McBob’s Gael Winds. Both teams have had an already drama filled season. In their first game, Brocach was in a tightly competitive match up against County Clare when the game was called early due to lightning; erasing what was up to that point phenomenal match. This is an oddity within the MHC, and one that their captains have used to fuel their team since. McBob’s on the other hand hand has been plagued by missing players and hindered by poor communication. Both teams though have fought through adversity and remain strong throughout each of their games; making this a highly anticipated game.

As the game began it was apparent that Brocach was still on the warpath, still frustrated with the called game weeks before. Excellent passing landed the play in the Gael Wind defense. Bandit Alec Fortier was quick to convert both points and goals often from odd angles near the corner of the field. However, the Gael Winds were not about to let any score go uncontested, or unanswered. By the end of the first quarter, it was still anyone’s game, though Brocach held lead of 2-5(11) to 1-1(4).

Play during both quarters of the first half was all about Bandit Fortier, and the number “5” must be his magical number. This is the 5th week of the season, and his 5th year playing. It is also Brocach’s 5th year as a sponsor. He scored 5 goals total in the first half along with a few points. Though Gael Wind defenders Denise Lubotsky, Eric Lemmer and the Mantyh boys were quick to swarm him, the sliotar seemed to only answer Fortier’s beck and call. The half ended with Brocach increasing their solid lead to 5-9 (24) to 2-1 (7).
