NEWS FROM OUR SITES
Anoka
At Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Adult Basic Education( ABE) proves that learning doesn’ t stop at a diploma. A critical part of our mission is supporting students who are enrolled in college but need help reaching college-level proficiency. Our innovative Metro North ABE model places ABE teachers directly in classrooms alongside college professors to ensure student success.
This year, we are expanding our volunteer program to include highly skilled experts— like Charlie Breit. While some shy away from math, Charlie embraces it as“ familiar as family.” In this collaboration, Charlie is volunteering in his daughter Professor Megan Breit-Goodwin’ s class. Together, father and daughter are sharing their lifelong love of mathematics with students just beginning their college journeys.
Blaine
Being an ABE teacher often means being a“ jack of all trades,” balancing math, science, language arts, and social studies daily. To better support our staff and students, we have officially restructured our Pre-High School Equivalency-most often resulting in a GED- program at Blaine.
By transitioning to a model that divides classes into specialized morning and post-break sessions, we are now leveraging our team’ s true expertise. This change allows our math and science specialists— and dedicated volunteers— to reach more learners with targeted, effective instruction. Simultaneously, students are seeing significant gains in language arts and social studies through unique, focused lessons. We are thrilled to see our teachers thrive and our students make real progress!
Brooklyn Center
In recent months, our community has seen an increase in the need for food and home deliveries. We are grateful to all of the community food shelves and organizations helping with those efforts. In order to provide support to a partner organization in the community that serves adult learners from our BC program, we conducted a staff food donation to CAPI’ s food shelf. The BC staff brought in a great collection of culturally specific foods and personal hygiene products that we then delivered to the local food shelf. It is all about neighbors helping neighbors.
