Innovating for Success:
Metro North ABE Volunteers Explore AI
At Metro North ABE, excellence is not just a goal— it is a standard maintained through volunteers’ commitment to professional development. To ensure the highest quality of instruction, the Minnesota Department of Education requires all volunteers with over one year of service to complete two hours of annual in-service training. This commitment to ongoing learning is a key factor in why Minnesota’ s ABE system is widely regarded as an exemplary national model.
Building on last year’ s foundations, Metro North ABE recently conducted a training titled“ Using AI Tools for Translanguaging.” This session focused on how volunteers can bridge language gaps by integrating artificial intelligence into their daily work with students. Rather than viewing primary languages as a barrier, the training emphasized“ translanguaging”— the practice of allowing learners to use their full linguistic repertoire to grasp complex concepts.
By exploring AI-enabled translation and content tools, volunteers learned to create more inclusive, supportive environments for multilingual learners. Comparing English phonology, orthography, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics to a student’ s home language. This forward-thinking approach ensures that Metro North ABE volunteers remain at the forefront of educational technology, directly contributing to the significant educational gains of Metro North ABE learners.
