MER Today Spring 2017 MER Newsletter - May2017 | Page 10
Message from the Chair:
I am always amazed at the strength and resilience of the mining sector and its people. We can all
take pride in the commitment, effort and work in supporting the mining sector over the past few
years in not only surviving a pervasive global economic downturn, but also the raging fires of Fort
McMurray and many other natural disasters. Today there is optimism as leading economic
indicators are starting to point to growth and prosperity, and people are returning to their lives
after these horrible disasters. The future is brighter. We survived. Well done everyone.
Looking back during this period the MER Society continued to deliver in its key mandates of
leadership and participation in organizing conferences especially the Technical Programs;
administering the awards and scholarship programs; and providing peer review of Technical
Papers for publication. Also key to our society is to provide a forum or network of Maintenance,
Engineering and Reliability professionals. We continue to connect and share innovative ideas,
experiences. Also, we continue to be involved and participate in the CIM organization and with
numerous other groups and committees in the mining and related sectors.
A true strength of any organization is its ability to change and innovate to meet its customer’s
needs, or in our case, member’s needs. The MER Society continues to change to increase value,
visibility and to better connect with our members. We welcome and are always open to your
thoughts or new ideas. The Maintenance, Engineering and Reliability Society (MER) of the CIM
thank all of you for your attention and ongoing support.
