cine and humanism in patient care. Throughout his exceptional career as an educator, Watson has been a recipient of the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award, which was presented to him at the nation’ s capital in 2005. The honor is bestowed by the Association of American Medical Colleges as the highest national recognition for contributions to the education mission.
In 2001, Watson was chair of the AAMC Group on Education Affairs. He has been the recipient of the Hippocratic Award( University of Florida College of Medicine Class of 1985), the Florida Medical Association Leadership in Medical Education Award( 1998) and the University of Florida Society of Teaching Scholars Lifetime Achievement Award( 2009). As a UF College of Medicine Wall of Fame honoree, his picture is currently on display in the Harrell Medical Education Building. The UF College of Medicine Wall of Fame was established in 1988 to“ recognize outstanding alumni who have made significant contributions to medicine, government, education, and the community.”
During his third year of medical school, Watson was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Since then, he has been a member of more than 15 other organizations, including the Florida Society of Neurology( 1972), the Florida Medical Association
( 1976-present), the American Medical Association( 1976-present), the American Academy of Neurology( 1976-present) and the American Neurological Association( 1983-present). In 2012, while in the role of executive associate dean at the Florida State University College of Medicine, Watson was honored with a classroom named after him at the University of Florida College of Medicine. The room is home to the Chapman Humanism Society, which is a chapter of the national Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Watson is trustee of the Jules B. Chapman and Annie Lou Chapman Private Foundation, which was created by Mrs. Annie Lou Chapman, who witnessed her husband, Jules B. Chapman, M. D., receive less than compassionate medical care during the final days of his life. Thanks to Watson’ s dedication to the foundation, Chapman Chapters of the Gold Humanism Honor Society have been established at medical colleges throughout the state, including the University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of Central Florida. In May 2024, the Florida State University College of Medicine unveiled its very own Chapman Wellness Garden, made possible by a sizable gift from the Chapman Foundation.
