Young Translators for Europe Award Cermony 18 th June
Due to the current health crisis , European Commission are not able to invite the organising teachers and the winners to Brussels for the Award Ceremony .
6 th Year student Alba Doherty-Madrigal is the Irish winner of the 2020 European Commission ’ s Young Translators for Europe competition .
The competition is organised annually to reward the best young translators in Europe . A restricted number of schools in each EU country is selected each year to participate in the competition . Ireland was represented by ten schools . Only students born in the year 2003 were eligible to compete . Students prepared in advance by working with texts from previous contest . Navigating in challenging times – together we are stronger !” was the title of the texts of the 2020 Juvenes Translatores contest .
Five students in total ( maximum number permitted ) represented Maynooth Post Primary / Maynooth Community College . Alba Doherty-Madrigal translated from Spanish into English . Greta Giardini translated from Italian into English . Emma Gorey translated from German into English . Ema Poldrugac translated from Croatian into English . Kirstin de Ora translated from French into English .
The contest took place online on 26 November 2020 and students across all 27 EU countries worked on their chosen language combinations at the same time , on same day .

However , winners will be invited to an online award ceremony , on Friday 18 June 2021 , to congratulate the 27 winners from across the EU . This will be a celebration of their accomplishments and a chance to present each of them . It will be a special moment to come together , even if virtually , to share experiences of the Juvenes Translatores contest .
Ms English who runs the contest in school each year adds : “ Initiatives like Juvenes Translatores are a celebration of languages and translation skills . The contest is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their command of foreign languages and mother languages .
The standard is very high in this competition . The students must complete their translation within a 2-hour time frame . It ’ s challenging , requires excellent language skills and an ability to find creative solutions to tricky idiomatic expressions .
