BUSINESS
Dear Milena, can you tell us, what is your education background and work
experience? And tell us how and why did you start your career as a
journalist/editor?
After graduating high school I wanted to study psychology, but my final exam grade was
0,3% below the acceptance line. So I began my studies of Public Administration by
coincidence. I passed all my exams with highest grades and finished my under graduate
studies in Portugal where I’ve written my thesis “The Comparative Analysis of Slovenian
and Portuguese media market”. I have just concluded my master’s degree as well with
my Master Thesis “The impact of Media on the Democratization of the Local
Government”. My extreme curiosity which I’ve developed in childhood was probably the
main reason I’ve begun my career as a journalist which happened by coincidence as
well. The curiosity seems to have paid off since I live from it now.
What is a typical day in the life of an editor?
When I wake up I first grab my tablet, go through all the “breaking news” alerts and
glance through my emails. I begin to set my daily priorities while driving to work. Then
my work with the team of journalists begins. Sometimes my business lunch ends with
me taking photographs of people worth writing about with my iPhone.
How do you see journalism evolving online? You're active on Twitter,
Facebook , Instagram, and you know that sometimes we are getting news as it
happens - even before news organizations have a chance to report it, is Social
Media replacing traditional journalism as a News Source?
It is and it isn’t replacing it. I believe all these platforms have instantaneous qualities.
They are happening now, at this moment. They do supply you with information but they
do not offer you in depth stories, that “something more” that the news reader demands.
These platforms will never be able to replace the traditional media and their work but
the role of these platforms is changing fast. I do feel that the ideal formula is placing
Social Media hand in hand with traditional media. To develop a synergy between them.
That would be a win-win situation. But I am sad to say that this process is too slow in
Slovenia.
What is your biggest driver in life, wh at motivates you to do your job? What is
Your Greatest Accomplishment?
The curiosity and the urge to discover new things, to discover news is my biggest driver.
I cannot imagine my life without my curiosity anymore. The daily routine composed of
