This year , the Scranton District Dental Society ( SDDS ) and Third District Dental Society kicked it into high gear this year in celebration of NCDHM . Many members of the dental societies visited local schools to educate children about the importance of good oral hygiene at a young age and distributed dental bags filled with toothbrushes , coloring pages , and more .
In collaboration with Third District and Volunteers in Medicine , the Luzerne County Dental Society gifted nearly a thousand oral health care bags and gave a dental health presentation to a local Head Start preschool .
The societies also partnered with local McDonald ’ s restaurants to host three events for children with special guests Peppa Pig and the Tooth Fairy . At the events , children enjoyed free photos with the characters , arts and crafts , a dental hygiene bag , a coupon for free french fries , and discounted Happy Meals .
SDDS president Dr . William Dempsey said , “ Our goal is to enable kids to experience dentistry in a fun , healthy way . We want to be a positive force , teaching children and their parents the importance of good , at-home hygiene and regular visits to their dental professional .”
“ We are thrilled to be back in the midst of the communities we serve !” said Dr . Alesia Walsh , Scranton District NCDHM chair . “ After a couple of COVID years , it ’ s more important than ever to meet and educate our children face-to-face . We love seeing their smiles as they pull out their new toothbrushes from their goodie bags .”
