From engineering to livestock farming

He grew up near Marokweng in the Leniesdeel area and, after school, went on to study engineering at TUT in Pretoria. In 2009 he came to work in Vryburg, where his mother farmed goats and sheep on communal land.

“ I always had to work on the farm when I came home over weekends and holidays, and becoming a farmer was never part of my plan. But in my second year at university I began to realise that I was the only one who would later be able to support my mother and help carry the farming operation,” he explains.

Next to the goat pens, Ivin’ s uncle Lehant, now in his seventies, helps out for about two weeks every month and keeps an eye on the animals, particularly the sick ones.“ He goes home regularly, but he enjoys supporting his younger sister here,” Ivin says.

In 2011 his mother received additional land on another farm as part of a project in Vostershoop. Over time more land became available, which is now leased as communal land through
