He is one of a group of modern young farmers breaking away from a traditional background and approaching livestock farming with a fresh perspective. There are obstacles, but Ivin assesses them carefully, tackles them head-on and, more often than not, overcomes them.
He grew up on a farm but initially saw little appeal in farming.“ I had to work on the farm over weekends when I came home from school, and that’ s probably why farm life didn’ t really attract me at first,” he says, sitting comfortably beneath the tree with a folding chair and cooler box nearby. A tree stump serves as an extra seat.( It’ s probably the first time I’ ve conducted an interview with a splinter in my finger after trying to move“ my chair”.)
